Using AI coding agents โ€‹

AI coding agents like Cursor and Claude Code can manage your Supersimple data models, metrics, and explorations directly from your editor.

Install the Supersimple agent skill to give them the knowledge they need to use the CLI, write valid YAML, and keep your setup in sync.

Installation โ€‹

With Node.js installed, run this from your project root:

bash
npx skills add https://assets.supersimple.io/skills

Follow the prompts to choose your skills, coding agents, and whether to install for this project or globally across projects. The installer supports Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and other coding agents.

Choose supersimple for CLI and configuration workflows, supersimple-apps for building Supersimple Apps, or both. Your agent will load the installed skills when relevant.

Claude Code plugin โ€‹

You can install both skills and the Supersimple MCP connection together, without Node.js. Run these commands inside Claude Code:

text
/plugin marketplace add https://assets.supersimple.io/skills/claude/marketplace.json
/plugin install supersimple@supersimple

Use /mcp to sign in to Supersimple. If you already installed the skills separately, remove those copies to avoid loading them twice.

Manual download โ€‹

Download the latest supersimple.zip or supersimple-apps.zip, or both. Extract each ZIP into a folder named after the skill in your agent's skills directoryโ€”for example, .claude/skills/supersimple/ for Claude Code. Keep SKILL.md and the references/ folder together.

Updating โ€‹

For the Claude Code plugin, run claude plugin update supersimple@supersimple in your terminal, then restart your Claude Code session. To enable automatic updates, open /plugin, choose Marketplaces, select supersimple, and enable auto-update.

Skills installed with npx skills stay at their installed version until you update them. For a global installation, run:

bash
npx skills update supersimple supersimple-apps --global

For a project installation, run this from that project's root:

bash
npx skills update supersimple supersimple-apps --project

These commands update the installed Supersimple skills, including their reference files, from the same source used for installation. Save any edits you've made to the installed files before updating; updates replace them. For manual installations, download the latest ZIPs from this page and replace the complete skill folders.

What the skill covers โ€‹

  • Authentication โ€” non-interactive login via CLI or environment variables
  • Data model management โ€” creating, editing, validating, and importing YAML config
  • Database discovery โ€” auto-generating models from your database schema
  • Explorations โ€” exporting and editing dashboards as code
  • Dynamic enums โ€” the skill guides the agent to set up load: distinct_values on categorical columns so the AI can filter accurately

Prerequisites โ€‹

You'll need a Supersimple account. CLI workflows also need an API token; the skill will guide the agent through installing the CLI and authenticating if needed.
